How to Audit Your Hinge Profile: Free 10-Point Checklist
A Hinge audit is a free 10-point checklist you can run on your own profile today: photos, prompts, completeness, Hinge's built-in tools, and an optional free AI score. Work through each point, mark pass or fail, then fix the fails in order. This guide is the full self-audit; it is not a coaching-style review write-up or a “where to get feedback” roundup.
We make MatchShot, a free AI dating profile analyzer that scores your Tinder, Hinge and Bumble photos and tells you what to fix, so weigh our view accordingly; Hinge's own help-center guidance is linked throughout.

How do you audit your Hinge profile for free?
Open Edit Profile, walk the 10-point checklist below, then fix fails in this order: lead photo, photo red flags, prompt rewrites, then preferences. Use Hinge's Prompt Feedback and Top Photo as built-in checks, and optionally run MatchShot's free AI audit (3-6 photos, about 60 seconds, no account) for a 0-100 score and per-photo flags. Change one or two things, then wait about a week.
- Photos (points 1-4): lead, variety, red flags, full slots + Top Photo.
- Prompts (points 5-7): specific answers, reply hooks, Prompt Feedback.
- Completeness (points 8-9): basics visible, preferences and liking habits.
- Score (point 10): optional free AI audit, then a short fix loop.
If you want where to get outside feedback (AI, Reddit, friends), use our free Hinge profile review guide. If you want a coaching-style walkthrough of what a review should look at, see the Hinge profile review page. Symptom-by-symptom diagnosis lives on why you're not getting matches on Hinge.
What should a Hinge audit check in your photos?
Start with photos: Hinge's own research puts photo quality at the center of getting more likes, and Top Photo exists because the first image carries so much of the first impression. Mark each point pass or fail before you move on.
Point 1: Lead photo shows your face clearly
Your first photo should make your face easy to read in under a second: eyes visible, natural light, no heavy crop or cover.
- Pass if: eyes are visible, lighting is even, and someone who has never met you would recognize you from that single frame.
- Fail if: sunglasses, a hat brim, a hand, a phone or a heavy filter hides your face, or the shot is so dim that only a silhouette reads.
- Fix: swap in a sharp close-up or half-body taken outdoors or by a window.
Point 2: Photo variety shows who you are
Across your set, include more than one photo type so the profile feels three-dimensional, not like six versions of the same selfie.
- Pass if: you have a clear face shot, at least one full-body or half-body, and at least one photo that shows an interest, hobby, pet or social setting.
- Fail if: every photo is the same angle, the same room or the same outfit.
- Hinge’s own list: photos that show your interests, candid shots, smiles, sports and photos with friends or pets tend to get more likes, per Hinge’s help article on getting matches.
Point 3: Clear photo red flags are gone
Remove the patterns Hinge itself says tend to get fewer likes before you worry about fine-tuning style.
- Watch for: bathroom or mirror selfies, filtered photos, sunglasses covering the eyes, posed “model” shots, beach clichés and photos with a potential significant other.
- Also cut: any group shot where it is not obvious which person is you, and any lead photo that is only a car selfie.
- Pass if: your top two slots are free of those patterns and your face is still the first thing someone sees.
Point 4: All photo slots filled, Top Photo on
Hinge requires four to six photos (depending on local requirements) plus three prompt answers for a complete profile. Empty slots read as unfinished.
- Pass if: you have filled every required photo slot and used View to see the order others see.
- Turn on Top Photo: Photo icon → Pencil icon → Top Photo toggle (purple = on). On iOS, tap Done to save; Android saves the toggle automatically.
- Why it matters: Top Photo continuously tests your photos and puts the one most likely to get a Like first, using a machine learning model — without collecting facial geometry or biometric data, per Hinge.
Photo guidance above follows Hinge's Why aren't I getting any matches? (updated July 2026), What is Top Photo? (updated June 2026) and How do I edit my profile? (updated July 2026). For shot ideas after you cut weak ones, see best Hinge photos and dating profile photo red flags.
How should a Hinge audit score your prompts?
Treat prompts as conversation bait, not a second bio: specific, replyable answers outperform vague one-liners, and Hinge will rate up to three of them for free if your profile is complete.
Point 5: All three prompts are filled and specific
Hinge shows three written prompt answers at a time. Vague one-liners make you sound like everyone else.
- Pass if: each answer includes a concrete detail only you would write — a place, dish, habit, book, trail or inside joke friends would recognize.
- Fail if: answers are a single word, a generic “I love to travel” or a cliché Hinge has called out (pineapple-on-pizza style takes and “overly competitive about… everything”).
- Edit path: Photo icon → Pencil → tap a prompt to rewrite, or the pencil beside the question to pick a new one.
Point 6: Each prompt invites a real reply
A strong prompt answer is easy to comment on. If the only reply someone can send is “haha same,” rewrite it.
- Pass if: you can invent a two-sentence comment on each answer in under ten seconds.
- Test: read each prompt aloud and ask, “What would I say back?” If you stall, add a hook — a question, a specific claim or a playful opinion.
- Optional extras: Photo Prompts, Video Prompts and one Prompt Poll are optional add-ons if you want more ways for people to Like a specific moment.
Point 7: Prompt Feedback has been checked
For users with complete profiles, Hinge rates up to three prompts as “Great Answer,” “Try a Small Change” or “Go a Little Deeper.”
- Pass if: every scored prompt is “Great Answer,” or you have already rewritten anything marked for a change.
- How to use it: edit a prompt, then read the private rating Hinge shows. Feedback never auto-rewrites your voice — you decide what to keep.
- Why bother: Hinge’s newsroom notes that nearly 40% of users find writing prompts very difficult, which is why the feature exists.
Prompt mechanics come from Hinge's How do I edit my Prompts?, How Prompt Feedback Works (updated June 2026) and the Prompt Feedback newsroom post. For rewrite formulas and examples, see how to write Hinge prompts that get replies.
What completeness checks belong in a Hinge audit?
A profile can look polished and still under-deliver if key fields are blank, filters are too narrow or you only send blank likes. Fold these two points into every audit so you are not optimizing photos while the rest of the account fights you.
Point 8: Basics and virtues are filled in
A complete profile is more than photos and prompts. Hinge’s edit screen covers identity, virtues, vitals and vices — and you control what is visible.
- Check: Dating Intentions, job or education if you want them shown, hometown, languages, height and the preferences that affect who sees you.
- Visibility: each field has a “Visible on Profile” control. Hide what you prefer private; show the details that help the right people self-select.
- View as others see you: Photo icon → Pencil → tap View at the top. Catch anything that looks empty or outdated before you leave Edit.
Point 9: Preferences and liking habits are honest
Your profile can look strong and still underperform if filters are too tight or you only send blank likes. Fold a quick activity check into the audit.
- Preferences: Hinge suggests considering “Show profiles outside of this preference” so you see more people and more people see you.
- Likes: send quality likes (ideally with a comment on a photo or prompt) rather than bulk-liking profiles you would not meet.
- New accounts: if you just joined, give the recommendation system time to learn — Hinge says building connections can take a while for new users.
When should you add a free AI Hinge audit?
Use a free AI audit as point 10 — after your self-checklist — when you want a scored second opinion on photos and prompt screenshots without posting publicly. It is one step in the checklist, not a replacement for Hinge's own tools or for human eyes.
Point 10: Run a free AI profile score
MatchShot's free audit lets you upload 3-6 dating photos (plus optional Hinge prompt screenshots), then returns results in about 60 seconds with no account and no credit card. You get an overall 0-100 score with tiers (Excellent 90+, Strong 75-89, Okay 60-74, Weak 40-59, Rebuild under 40), six categories per photo (first impression, photo quality, pose, facial expression, environment, value signal), red and green flags, a ranked lead-photo order and prompt rewrite suggestions when you include text screenshots.
- Best for: catching lead-photo problems, weak variety and prompt clichés you have stopped noticing.
- Privacy: photos are not sold or shared; the report lives at a private link; deletion is available on request.
- Limits: an AI score is not a vote from real Hinge users in your city. Pair it with Top Photo, Prompt Feedback and, if you want humans, the options in our free review guide.

How do you score the checklist and fix what fails?
Count passes out of 10, then fix fails in impact order instead of rewriting everything at once. A useful audit ends with a short action list, not a rebuilt profile you cannot learn from.
- 9-10 passes: maintain. Re-check after any photo or prompt swap.
- 6-8 passes: fix the fails this week, starting with the lead photo and any Prompt Feedback warnings.
- 5 or fewer: rebuild the photo set and prompts before you touch preferences or paid Boosts.
Fix order that usually helps most
- First: replace a weak lead photo and cut clear red flags.
- Second: rewrite prompts that failed specificity, replyability or Prompt Feedback.
- Third: fill empty photo slots, turn on Top Photo, and verify basics with View.
- Fourth: widen overly tight preferences and send more commented likes.
- Then wait: about a week with the new version before judging likes and matches.
If likes stay flat after those fixes, run the symptom checklist on why you're not getting matches on Hinge — sometimes the issue is account holds, Your Turn Limits or discovery settings rather than the profile itself.
FAQ
What is a Hinge audit?
A Hinge audit is a structured review of your photos, prompts and profile basics against clear criteria. This free 10-point checklist is a self-audit you can run in about 20 minutes; a free AI audit adds a 0-100 score and per-photo flags when you want a second opinion.
How long does a Hinge profile audit take?
Plan on about 15-20 minutes for the self-checklist, plus about 60 seconds if you also run MatchShot’s free AI audit. Spend most of that time on your lead photo and your three prompt answers — those drive first impressions and comments.
Do I need to pay for a Hinge audit?
No. You can audit your own profile with this checklist, Hinge’s Prompt Feedback and Top Photo, and MatchShot’s free AI score (no account, no credit card). Paid human reviews exist if you want live coaching, but they are not required to find the biggest fixes.
Should I turn on Hinge Top Photo during an audit?
Yes, once your photo set is filled. Hinge’s Top Photo uses a machine learning model to predict which photo is most likely to get a Like and puts it first. Turn it on under your Photo icon, then the Pencil icon, then the Top Photo toggle (iOS users must tap Done to save).
What should I change first after a Hinge audit?
Change one or two things, starting with the lead photo if your face is unclear, then any prompt that Prompt Feedback marks “Go a Little Deeper” or “Try a Small Change.” Give the new version about a week before judging results, so you know which change helped.
Is this the same as a free Hinge profile review?
No. A free profile review is about where to get feedback (AI, Reddit, friends, Hinge’s tools). This page is the full dedicated 10-point self-audit checklist. Use both: run the checklist, then get an outside review on anything still unclear.
Run the checklist, then get a scored second opinion
A free Hinge audit is mostly honesty with a checklist: clear lead photo, variety without red flags, replyable prompts, a complete profile and Hinge's own Top Photo and Prompt Feedback turned on. When you want a scored pass over the same photos, run MatchShot's free Hinge audit and fix what both the checklist and the score agree on.
