How to Write Hinge Prompts That Get Replies (With Rewrites)

Good Hinge prompt answers, like the examples and rewrites below, share one specific detail and leave an easy opening for a reply. Generic, one-word answers give people nothing to comment on. This guide covers how Hinge prompts work today, a four-step formula, before-and-after rewrites for nine common prompts, and the answers to avoid.

We make MatchShot, so weigh our view accordingly; every Hinge fact below links to Hinge's own help center or newsroom.

How do you write Hinge prompts that get replies?

Pick three prompts that fit a real story, answer each with one specific detail, and end with a hook someone can reply to. Swap “I love travel” for the one place you would go back to tomorrow. Keep each answer to one or two sentences, avoid clichés, and run your answers through Hinge's free Prompt Feedback before you publish.

  • Specific beats clever: a real detail gives people a reason to comment, even if it is not funny.
  • Leave a door open: the best answers make the reader want to ask “which one?” or “wait, why?”
  • Write in your own voice: examples are for structure; copy the shape, not the words.

How do Hinge prompts work in 2026?

Hinge profiles show three written prompt answers at a time, and you can change or reorder them whenever you like. According to Hinge's help article “How do I edit my Prompts?”, you can also add optional Photo Prompts, one Video Prompt and one Prompt Poll. Hinge says answering with something specific “gives other daters a real reason to reach out.”

  • Written prompts: three answers, editable anytime. Tap the Photo icon, then the Pencil icon, then tap an answer to edit it or the Pencil beside a prompt to choose a new one. Prompts are grouped by category.
  • Photo Prompts: pair a prompt with one of your photos instead of text. Optional.
  • Video Prompt: pair a prompt with a short video. You can add one. Optional.
  • Prompt Poll: write three options, and people can send a Like or Rose to the one that speaks to them. You can add one. Optional.
  • Passing Thoughts: Hinge says it is currently testing short weekly answers that disappear after seven days, so you may or may not see them.

Why do your Hinge prompt answers matter?

On Hinge, prompts are where many conversations start, and Hinge's own data says they lead to dates more often than photos do. When Hinge launched Prompt Feedback in January 2025, it reported that in 2024, likes on text prompts were 47% more likely to lead to a date than likes on photos.

  • Comments matter: Hinge says likes sent with a comment are twice as likely to lead to a date, and 72% of daters are more likely to consider someone when a like includes a message (Hinge, Convo Starters announcement). A specific answer is much easier to comment on.
  • Most people find it hard: in the same launch post, 63% of surveyed Hinge users said they struggled to know what to include on their profile. In a November 2025 post, Hinge said nearly 40% of users find answering prompts very difficult.
  • Short is not always sweet: Hinge notes that many prompt answers are only one word, and that saying less “can actually make your profile sound like everyone else's.”

Photos still decide whether someone stops scrolling, so pair good prompts with a strong lead photo. See which photo should be first on Hinge.

What is the formula for a good Hinge prompt answer?

A good Hinge prompt answer is one specific detail plus one hook, in one or two sentences. The detail shows who you are; the hook tells the reader what to say back. Follow these four steps for each of your three prompts.

Step 1: Choose prompts that fit a story you can tell

Scroll the categories and pick prompts you can answer with a real memory, habit, opinion or plan. Aim for a mix across your three: one that shows your personality, one about everyday life, and one about what you want. If you are looking for something serious, say so in one of them.

Step 2: Replace every general word with a specific one

Circle the vague words (“food”, “travel”, “adventures”, “music”) and swap each for a name, place, number or moment. “I love hiking” becomes “I'm slowly hiking every trail within an hour of the city. 11 down.”

Step 3: Add a hook

End with something the reader can react to: a mild opinion, a choice, a small challenge, or a detail that begs a follow-up. Ask yourself, “What would someone type back?” If you cannot think of a reply, neither can they.

Step 4: Read all three together, then get feedback

Check that your three answers do not repeat the same idea or tone, and that none of them is negative. Then open Hinge's Prompt Feedback: for users with complete profiles, it rates up to three prompts as “Great Answer”, “Try a Small Change” or “Go a Little Deeper”.

Hinge prompt answer examples: before and after rewrites

The fastest way to improve a weak Hinge prompt answer is to keep the prompt and rewrite the answer with one real detail and a hook. The examples below are original and fictional, written to show the method. Use them as patterns, not lines to copy. Prompt wording on Hinge can change, so pick the closest match in your app.

“My simple pleasures”

  • Before: “Coffee, travel, and good food.”
  • Why it falls flat: Three nouns that fit almost anyone, so there is nothing to ask about.
  • After: “The first coffee on my balcony before anyone texts me, and finding a street I’ve somehow never walked down.”
  • Reply hook: Where the balcony is, or which street they found last.

“I geek out on”

  • Before: “Movies.”
  • Why it falls flat: A one-word answer, the exact style Hinge says can make you sound like everyone else.
  • After: “Film soundtracks. I will pause a movie to look up who wrote the score, and I have opinions about the best one of the last ten years.”
  • Reply hook: The obvious question: “Okay, which one?”

“Together, we could”

  • Before: “Go on adventures.”
  • Why it falls flat: Vague. Nobody can picture the date, so nobody can say yes to it.
  • After: “Find the best dumplings in the city, one neighbourhood per weekend. I have a shortlist and a strict scoring system.”
  • Reply hook: Their favourite dumpling spot, or a challenge to the scoring system.

“The way to win me over is”

  • Before: “Be honest and don’t play games.”
  • Why it falls flat: Reads as a rule list and quietly assumes the reader might be dishonest.
  • After: “Remember one tiny thing I said and bring it up a week later. I’ll do the same and I’ll be smug about it.”
  • Reply hook: A playful promise the other person can answer in kind.

“I’m looking for”

  • Before: “Someone who doesn’t take themselves too seriously.”
  • Why it falls flat: One of the most common phrases on dating apps; it says little about you.
  • After: “Someone who wants something long-term, likes a slow Sunday, and is curious enough to try the weird dish on the menu.”
  • Reply hook: States your intention clearly and gives two easy things to agree or disagree with.

“A life goal of mine”

  • Before: “To be happy.”
  • Why it falls flat: True for everyone, so it is not a goal anyone can talk to you about.
  • After: “Run one marathon before I’m 40 and then never mention it again. (I will mention it constantly.)”
  • Reply hook: Training questions, or a story about their own goal.

“Typical Sunday”

  • Before: “Chilling.”
  • Why it falls flat: One word, and it could describe anyone’s Sunday.
  • After: “Farmers market at 10, a long lunch, then calling my grandmother, who gives better dating advice than any app.”
  • Reply hook: The grandmother line invites a warm, easy reply.

“My most irrational fear”

  • Before: “Spiders lol.”
  • Why it falls flat: Common, and the “lol” signals you did not spend time on it.
  • After: “Saying “you too” when the waiter says “enjoy your meal”. It has happened three times this year.”
  • Reply hook: Almost everyone has a matching story.

“Dating me is like”

  • Before: “An adventure.”
  • Why it falls flat: A cliché with no picture behind it.
  • After: “Having a friend who always knows a good spot for dinner but will still ask you three times if you’re sure about dessert.”
  • Reply hook: A concrete, likeable trait that invites a teasing reply.

Which Hinge prompt answers should you avoid?

Avoid answers that could appear on anyone's profile, answers that are negative, and one-word answers. Hinge's Director of Relationship Science, Logan Ury, named “pineapple on pizza” and being “overly competitive about… everything” as familiar clichés that “often fall short” (Hinge newsroom).

  • Clichés: pineapple on pizza, “fluent in sarcasm”, “partner in crime”, “the Pam to my Jim”.
  • One-word answers: “Tacos.” “Travel.” They save you time and cost you replies.
  • Lists of demands: height rules, “no drama”, “swipe left if…”. They read as defensive, not selective.
  • Negativity about dating or exes: “Hoping this app works this time” makes people feel tired before they have met you.
  • Inside jokes and heavy slang: if a stranger needs context, they will scroll past.
  • Copied lines: popular example answers get reused, and people notice.

Should you use AI to write your Hinge prompts?

Use AI for feedback, not for the final words. Hinge's own AI tools take the same line: the company says Prompt Feedback and Convo Starters “do not provide pre-written language for daters to copy and paste,” and that Prompt Feedback uses “no auto-rewrites” so your voice stays your own.

A practical middle ground is to write a rough draft yourself, ask a tool or a friend what is vague, then fix it in your own words. MatchShot, a free AI dating profile analyzer that scores your Tinder, Hinge and Bumble photos and tells you what to fix, also reads Hinge prompt screenshots.

  • What you upload: 3 to 6 photos, plus optional screenshots of your Hinge prompts or Tinder bio. No account and no credit card.
  • What you get: in about 60 seconds, an overall 0-100 score, red and green flags for each photo, a ranked photo order, and suggested rewrites for weak prompts.
  • How to use the rewrites: treat them as a draft. Swap in your own details so the answer still sounds like you.

No tool can promise matches or replies. If your likes are low across the board, the problem may be photos rather than words; our guide on why you are not getting matches on Hinge walks through both.

FAQ

How many prompts do you need on Hinge?

Hinge profiles display three written prompt answers at a time, and you can swap or edit them as often as you like. Photo Prompts, a Video Prompt and a Prompt Poll are optional extras, per Hinge’s help center.

How long should a Hinge prompt answer be?

One or two short sentences is usually enough: long enough for one specific detail, short enough to read at a glance. Hinge says many answers are only one word and that very short answers can make a profile sound like everyone else’s.

What are the best Hinge prompts to answer?

Pick prompts that let you share a specific story, opinion or plan, such as “Together, we could”, “I geek out on” or “My simple pleasures”. Mix one playful answer with one that shows what you are looking for.

Should Hinge prompt answers be funny?

Only if funny is how you actually talk. A specific, sincere answer usually beats a generic joke, and Hinge says its Prompt Feedback holds back on nudges when humor is part of your story. Aim for one light answer, not three.

Does Hinge tell you if your prompts are bad?

Yes, in a gentle way. Prompt Feedback rates up to three prompts as “Great Answer”, “Try a Small Change” or “Go a Little Deeper” for users with complete profiles. It gives tips but does not write the answer for you.

Can I copy Hinge prompt answers from examples?

Use examples for structure, not wording. Copied lines are easy to spot and give people nothing real to reply to. Swap in your own places, habits and plans so the answer could only be yours.
